A gentle guide to measuring yourself

Wear something close-fitting, stand at ease and let the tape rest snugly, never tightly, like a soft embrace. A friend's helping hand makes it easier still.

• Bust: let the tape travel around the fullest part of the chest, resting level across the back.
• Under bust: circle the ribcage, just where the bust gives way below.
• Waist: find the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the navel, and let the tape settle there.
• Hips: circle the fullest part of the hips and seat, with your feet resting together.
• Shoulder: across the back, from the tip of one shoulder to the tip of the other.
• Armhole: around the top of the arm, under the arm and back over the tip of the shoulder.
• Sleeve length: from the tip of the shoulder down to wherever you'd like your sleeve to say goodbye.
• Kurta or top length: from the highest point of the shoulder down to where you'd like the hem to fall. Bottom length: from the waist down to the ankle.
